My love of the Lune and Ribble Valleys

Share

The Ribble Valley was my home for 23 years. I grew up outside the small Ribble Valley village of Gisburn, an area of beautiful open countryside with rolling pastures and adventurous countryside walks. One of my favourite places is Pendle Hill, famous for its witch trials of 1612 and a popular tourist destination where many visitors enjoy a long distance walk followed by a refreshing drink at the Pendle Inn at Barley. Further down the valley situated at the foot of Pendle hill is the unspoilt village of Downham, often hailed the most beautiful village of Lancashire with the popular TV series Born and Bred being filmed here. If visiting, don’t forget to have lunch at the superb Grade II listed country pub, the Assheton Arms.

Moving from my home in the Ribble Valley to the Lune Valley almost 4 years ago, I never get bored of the unspoilt countryside or admiring the River Lune meandering its way through the ancient stone villages. The Crook o’Lune is one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Lune; famous for the painter Turner who often used this stretch of river for his inspiration. Today the area remains popular with many locals and visitors enjoying picnics by the river.

The nearby historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale provides excellent schools, good shopping and a wide range of pubs and restaurants to suit everyone’s tastes. It is easy to understand why it was voted the best place to live in the North West in 2019! Take a leisurely stroll up to Ruskin’s View and look out over the open countryside or enjoy an ice cream at the popular Milking Parlour with plenty of heavenly flavours to choose from.

If you are considering choosing a home in the Ribble Valley or the Lune Valley, whether you are a first time buyer or searching for a ‘lock-up and leave’ second home – there is something for all tastes. I have no doubt that anyone moving to the Ribble or Lune Valleys will love living here.
